Welcome to the first FESPA foundation newsletter. Established in October 2024, the FESPA Foundation is built on two core objectives:

1. Repurposing exhibition materials that would otherwise go to waste
2. Improving access to education in rural communities around the worldFrom reusing printed outputs to enhancing school infrastructure, the FESPA Foundation is working with the print industry to create long-lasting change in education and sustainability.

   Welcome Durst: 

   Our First Official Foundation Partner

We are proud to announce Durst as the first official Partner of the FESPA Foundation. This partnership marks a major milestone in our growth, helping us:

• Secure long-term sustainability for our projects 
• Expand our global reach
• Strengthen partnerships that go beyond one-off support

   Exhibitors Materials, 

   Repurposed for Good

As part of our mission to reduce waste, the Foundation is delivering a range of repurposed materials to Malekapane, generously donated by our Founding Sponsors during the recent FESPA Global Print Expo in Berlin. These include:

1. School uniforms 
2. Educational resources
3. Informational posters

Most of these items were printed on-site at the Expo and would have otherwise gone to waste. We hope to be able to update you with images and videos in our next Newsletter of these items arriving and being distributed to the relevant schools.This initiative highlights our commitment to sustainability—giving new life to exhibition outputs while supporting educational development.

   Spotlight on 

   Malekapane Primary School

One of our current key projects is Malekapane Primary School—a rural school with 97 pupils and nine dedicated staff members. The school is facing urgent infrastructure challenges, including:

• A roof with no insulation, despite extreme temperatures reaching 42°C
• A mud-and-stone kitchen that is unsafe and not fit for purpose
• A floor-level gas stove, posing a serious risk to children and staff

Last weekend, a group of staff and volunteers painted the outside of the school – please see before and after pictures below. Whilst the school principal has proactively launched a brick-making initiative to rebuild the kitchen, immediate support is still needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the school community.

   New Initiative: 

   ‘Adopt a School

’We’re excited to introduce the ‘Adopt a School’ programme—an opportunity for industry stakeholders to commit to deep, ongoing engagement with a selected school (information on the schools currently marked for this initiative below).Partners will support not only the initial infrastructure and resources but also accompany the school on its long-term development journey, helping to foster safe, inspiring, and sustainable learning environments.We are delighted to announce that the Durst Group will be the first organisation in our community to join our "Adopt A School"

 initiative by partnering with Malekapane Primary School. We look forward to sharing the inspiring journey ahead as both Durst and the school embark on this meaningful collaboration.

   Expanding Our Impact: 

   What's Next

In addition to Malekapane, the Foundation is actively involved in:

• Building new toilet facilities at Evane Combine School (our pilot project)
• Preparing interventions for three more rural schools identified by our local team:

These schools face urgent needs—ranging from basic classroom infrastructure to uniforms, kitchens, and toilets. Our work on these projects is set to begin during the October 2025 school holidays, with a firm focus on sustainable, high-impact outcomes for both students and staff.
